The Structure
Subject + had + been + V-ing
-
Had: Use had for ALL subjects (I, You, He, She, It, We, They). It never changes.
-
Been: This helps form the continuous aspect.
-
V-ing: Add -ing to the main verb (e.g., waiting, working, raining).
I had been waiting for an hour when the bus finally arrived.
(The waiting happened before the bus arrived.)
The road was wet because it had been raining.
(The rain explains why the road was wet in the past.)
